I recently picked up my dry cleaning, and a tag with the words “Do-Over” was attached to one of my shirts that needed to be repaired. With Yom Kippur approaching, this little message from my dry cleaner really got me thinking. What do-overs do I need in my life?
A do-over is defined as “a new attempt or opportunity to do something after a previous attempt has been unsuccessful or unsatisfactory.” Maybe I need a do-over to repair a strained relationship with a friend or a family member. Maybe I need a do-over to repair bad or hurt feelings because of something I said or did to someone or because of something someone said or did to me. Maybe I need a do-over to repair a broken heart or a broken promise.
That little tag on my shirt is a reminder for me that being forgiven and offering forgiveness are opportunities for us to repair relationships with a do-over. So, I will say it here - if I have ever said or done anything to offend or hurt you, I am sorry. If I could have helped you and did not, I am sorry. If I did not take your suggestion, please forgive me. If you have wronged me, I forgive you. Let’s do a do-over. I never would have thought that a message from my dry cleaner could be so inspiring.
I wish you a Shanah Tovah, G’mar Hatima Tovah, and a meaningful fast. I look forward to seeing you in shul. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, or if we need a do-over, you can always reach out to me at rons@tbsonline.org or (856) 751-6663 x218 or stop by my office.
