Phishing Scam Awareness

Just a friendly reminder to BE AWARE OF EMAIL AND TEXT PHISHING SCAMS! Email and text phishing scams are carried out by tech-savvy con artists and identity theft criminals. They use fake emails and texts constructed to look identical to real emails and texts from those you know. If you get an email or text asking you to purchase meat, it’s Spam (get it?). But seriously, if you get an email or text asking you to purchase something or to take action such as responding to the email or text, just delete it. Emails and texts like this have been circulating again claiming to be from Rabbi Peltz. Here are some pointers to detect email and text scams:

  • Look at the area code of the text message and the email address of the sender (the email addresses of TBS staff and clergy start with our name and end with @tbsonline.org – see mine below as an example). An unfamiliar area code of a text could be an indicator of a potential scam.
  • If an email or text looks suspicious, it probably is.
  • Typos and poorly written emails and texts are a good indicator that an email or text is a scam.
  • If the message creates a sense of urgency and asks you to take action, that is a good indicator that an email or a text is a scam.
  • If you suspect that an email or text is suspicious, do not reply or click on any links, and do not proceed with any requested actions.

Phishing scams will continue. But stay vigilant and let’s make sure they do not catch anything by falling for their bait.

Shabbat Shalom, and I look forward to seeing you in Shul. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you can always reach out to me at rons@tbsonline.org or (856) 751-6663 x218.

B’shalom,
Ron Safier
